If you've dabbled in skincare, you've probably heard of K-beauty. Glass skin, snail mucin, sheet masks—the list goes on, and for good reason. But after my most recent trip to India, I found myself wondering why the conversation seemed to stop there. A country with thousands of years of Ayurvedic tradition surely had its own answer to skincare.

It absolutely does.

Ayurveda, which translates to "the science of life," is a holistic system of medicine that originated in the Indian subcontinent more than 3,000 years ago. It emphasizes whole-body wellness, herbal remedies, and restoring balance to the body, mind, and spirit. This of course is a prelude to some incredible skincare routines.

When I came across Sahajan, a Canadian skincare brand founded by entrepreneur Lisa Mattam, whose family roots trace back to Kerala, India, I felt like I'd found the perfect introduction. Sahajan blends Ayurvedic-inspired ingredients with modern skincare science, making centuries-old practices feel approachable without losing their roots.

If I was going to embrace Ayurveda, I figured I might as well dive in with two ingredients that have a reputation for irritating sensitive skin: vitamin C and retinol. Sahajan happened to offer both through its Radiance Face Serum and Eternal Glow Cream.

Sahajan- Radiance Face Serum: $64.00

After starting my routine with a gentle cleanser, Sahajan's Radiance Face Serum became the second step in my lineup. A few drops massaged into my face and neck were all it took. The first thing you'll notice is the scent — a refined, perfume-like fragrance that feels more luxurious than clinical. Dispensed with a glass dropper, the serum has a warm bronze hue and a slightly viscous texture. It spreads effortlessly and absorbs quickly.

I'm pretty late to the vitamin C party, but after using it consistently, I started to notice a more balanced complexion. My skin looked smoother, and there was a more even tone and texture that I hadn't realized I was missing. Better yet, the Radiance Face Serum never left my skin feeling tight or stripped, despite what I’ve heard about vitamin C's reputation for irritating more sensitive skin.

At the heart of the formula is Vitamin C, a skincare powerhouse prized for its ability to brighten complexions and help even out skin tone over time – this formula in particular has over twenty times the amount found in an orange. Beyond other familiar ingredients like aloe vera and hyaluronic acid, Sahajan turns to Ayurveda, incorporating botanicals like amla, an antioxidant-rich fruit; haritaki, a skin-supporting botanical; and bibhitaki, an antioxidant-rich botanical—three plants traditionally used to help nourish and protect the skin.

Sahajan- Eternal Glow Cream: $56.00

Once the Radiance Face Serum has been absorbed, I follow up with Sahajan's Eternal Glow Cream. Despite its rich texture, it never feels heavy or greasy, leaving my skin hydrated without feeling weighed down. It settles into the skin quickly, leaving behind a healthy, radiant finish that makes it a prime candidate for both morning and evening routines. The fragrance is noticeably subtler than the face serum's, with a botanical-like aroma with notes of saffron.

The star of the formula is bakuchiol, a plant-derived ingredient that's often compared to retinol for its ability to improve the appearance of fine lines, skin texture, and firmness. Unlike retinol, however, bakuchiol is generally considered a gentler option, making it an appealing choice for those who find traditional retinoids too harsh. As someone who spends most workdays outdoors, I found a way to incorporate a retinol alternative into my routine without the irritation that often discourages people from using traditional retinoids.

For a cream that looks and feels this rich, I was surprised by how light it feels once it settles into the skin. Even in the summer heat, it never felt heavy or left my face looking overly shiny. Better yet, eight or nine hours later, my skin never had that tight, dried-out feeling I usually notice by the end of the workday.

Final Thoughts

Sahajan  blends modern skincare science with centuries of Ayurvedic tradition, creating products that honor South Asia's wellness heritage while making those practices easy to incorporate into a modern routine.

After incorporating the Eternal Glow Cream and Radiance Face Serum into my skincare routine over the past few months, I've realized just how much my routine had been missing. My skin looks smoother, my complexion is more even, and both products layer effortlessly with the rest of my routine. Best of all, I can finally use a retinol that delivers results without the irritation I had always worried about.

Needless to say, I'll be ordering my next batch soon.
